Answer ALS: Dedicated to Ending ALS

Answer ALS is a global nonprofit organization committed to halting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) through a unified, aggressively funded strategy that drives innovation in research, science, technology, and education. A continued goal is to unite the global ALS community around shared goals, open access to data and biosamples, and foster collaboration to accelerate the discovery of treatments and a cure for ALS.

The organization was born from the 2013 ALS Team Gleason Summit, which convened leading researchers, patients, caregivers, and advocates. Spearheaded by former NFL player Steve Gleason, who lives with ALS and also founded the nonprofit advocacy group Team Gleason, the Summit aimed to devise a plan to find a treatment or cure for ALS as swiftly as possible. Within a year, this vision crystallized into the strategic plan that became Answer ALS.

The initial funding for the Answer ALS Research Program was championed by Jay Fishman, former Chairman and CEO of The Travelers Companies, and ALS Finding a Cure (a project of the nonprofit Leandro P. Rizzuto Foundation). After his ALS diagnosis, Jay Fishman declared, “I sought the most aggressive project with the greatest potential for rapid results through clear benchmarks and milestones. This was that project.” Through his leadership, alongside the Rizzuto family and Foundation, and later leaders like Peter Warlick and Ed Rapp, Answer ALS was established as a nonprofit force for change.

Today, Answer ALS’s nonprofit mission is supported by a growing network of partners, including: The Fishman Family, ALS Finding a Cure, The Travelers Companies, the National Football League, the PGA TOUR, The Bari Lipp Foundation, American Airlines, Warlick’s Warriors’ Aviators Against ALS, Stay Strong vs ALS, Team Gleason, Microsoft, Gates Ventures, and many other generous donors and advocates.

Headquartered in New Orleans, LA, and Washington, D.C., Answer ALS collaborates with research partners, advocates, members, and donors worldwide, driving a nonprofit-led movement to end ALS.
